Technical Difficulties

The Commissioner's Office has encountered massive computer failure on its server, so communication will be difficult. New hard drives and a reinstalled operating system are forthcoming, but we are relying on inhouse expertise, so nothing is guaranteed.

Suffice to say that owners are encouraged to find the list of scheduled games and send them to either the Commissioner or this blog. This is a real test of owner fortitude and commitment, but circumstances are dire.

Quick News. One week after owner (and points leader) Kevin attacked owner Marc (and just about every other owner, Marc came in first for the week with a 13-3 record. Marc's three losing picks were all heavy favorites (and picked by every other owner—the Jags, the Chargers, and the Eagles. Kevin tied the coin toss at 10-6. To be gracious, the Commissioner admits the possibility that Kevin was attempting to inspire other owners with his vituperative comments. The possibility is slim, but it is still there. Or it could be that Kevin is frustrated by the relative silence of other owners, except for cousin Wayne and the Commissioner. Owner Ed's silence is anticipated and accepted; few owners think he has anything to say anyway.

The Monday Night win by the Saints will result in a bonus for the four owners who picked them—Kevin, the Commissioner, Marc and Kate. This is the first time that owners significantly split on the Monday Night pick.

Investigating??

There seems to be a lack of follow-up with the Commish and his "investigations". To date the only two with any resolution to it has been Cuz and his belated picks of long ago and Kate the Great hitting the snooze button in the first week! I understand the Commish taking the short route with Cuz so that the office would not be further bombarded with the useless rhetoric coming from the midwest. There are indications of family favoritism in the Kate case. Rest assured the owners will revisit such breaches in the off-season.
Still no word as to if Luke, Mark and Uncle Ed actually exist! This matter surely suggests an investigation is necessary. It is possible they all have suffered their third season-ending concussion.
Bran/Ryan I see are continuing to choose birdbrain teams which should ultimately lead to their demise. SeanO is pressing on the throttle to stay close while the Commish must have some inside info as to who is going to win. How else could he be this close this late in the season. Cuz I can not comment on right now because a suit is pending. Jo is counting on a big post-season rally while Mark just hopes the season ends.

Yours in football,
Kev

Week 16 Picks

Picking with the Favorites

Out of 160 possible picks, owners picked the favorite 138 times, for an 86% rate. Not sure what this means, but further investigation is planned by the Commissioner.

trophy

Commish:
There is little reasonable doubt by now that Luke, Marcus, Uncle Ed and Kate the Great are vying for the lower-than-low honors for the first pool season. They are all in line for the "floating in the pool" trophy. Kate insists that she is a step above the group but time will tell.
Also, this spam coming out of the midwest continues to clutter the blog. Please put a blocker on any and all "midwest muck". The pool's integrity is being compromised by WW(Whiner Wayne). Are Luke, Marcus and Uncle Ed real people? I see that they make selections each week but talk about silent partners!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are they kidding!!!

Commissioner's Observations on Week 15

Kevin Stumbles. This week sees a new leader in points and a tightening of the standings overall. With Kevin's stumble, Bran and Ryan took the lead with 94 points, followed by Kevin and Sean with 92, then Mike and Wayne with 88, then JoJo with 85. Ed, Marc, Luke and Kate follow with 84, 83 82 and 81, respectively.

Bran and Ryan Surge. Strong all season, Bran and Ryan are showing staying power. Using a unique picking method, they are in the lead. With the season winding down (or, curiously, I could also say winding up!), they are in the best position to win it all, seeing as most of the playoff games will be pretty predictable. The one blemish on their record is, of course, picking against the Patriots. Unfortunately, that will always be on their record,

Picks of the Week. Bran and Ryan picked the Jets, the only owner to do so. The Commissioner picked the Bills over the Fins. Luke picked the Lions over Tampa Bay, a prescient pick if there ever was one.  But Bran and Ryan take the honors this week because of the importance of that Jet victory. It might keep the Chargers out of the playoffs.

Trends. Owners who pick the favorites have been very successful. I know Ed for one relies upon the points to guide his choices, but analysis of the picks shows that the vast majority of owners pick the favorite, although those who don't have made some gains recently. This is a statistic the Commissioner will look at more closely in the future.

Owner Inquiries. Noting Kevin's 7-9 effort this week, Cousin Wayne  wonders if there has ever been another owner to pick below .500. Exhaustive research shows that both Sean and JoJo were 6-7 for week 8 and Easy Ed was 6-8 during week 10. Ed then shoulders the ignominy of having the lowest percentage at .428 to Kevin's .437. Sorry Ed.

Commissioner Ruling. The Commissioner has considered Cousin Wayne's suggestion that Kevin's column of picks, given his recent lack of success, be relocated to the right of the coin toss, but feels that would be inappropriate at this time. The Commissioner is, of course, grateful for any and all suggestions that would improve the success of the league.

Owners meeting

Special request to the office of the Commish. The title for Kate's picks should now be officially changed to Kate and Baby M. Yes, she is due in August as the family grows in number. I expect this request to be voted on and ratified as of yesterday without any dissent.
As for other unrelated business, I am waiting for the thunderous response from certain owners as to last week's record. All good teams have a slump and I fully expect to come back strong. It is totally unacceptable to let Bran/Ryan stay on top for too long. I am available to let her know how to handle the pressure of being on top though.
Cuz's latest outburst concerning just about everything that is on his mind deserves little to no response. This senseless babbling brings back memories of when he would lose a game of All-Star spinner baseball. It pretty much would ruin the whole summer as Aunt Millie had to intervene and tell us "let him win" which by the way was not part of mother's make-up. This rant I'm sure is fueled by his middle-of-the-pack standing dating back to week one of the pool when the Commish needed to settle the Midwest Muck that Cuz was slinging. Now he rips the Commish with slanderous remarks such as "kingdom". He has been reading too much about Nancy Pelosi!!!! There should be a suspension here due to the head-to-head contact!

All for now from Charleston SC and Merry Christmas and a Happy Play-off season to all!

Week 14 Observations

More agreement amongst owners! All picked the Colts, the Falcons, the Steelers, The Saints, and the Ravens. All but one picked the Jags, the Packers, the Pats, the Chargers, the Jets and the Eagles.
Picks of the Week. Wayne for the Lions over the Packers, and Marcus for the Fins over the Jets.
Hope over Experience. Both Wayne and Ed picked the Vikings. Kate picked the Chiefs over the Chargers.
The Commissioner is on record as forgiving Cousin Wayne for picking against the Pats, given he lives in Illinois. However, in a call from the Commissioner’s office, he admitted that he actually hates the Bears (ever since they made the Super Bowl Shuffle video!) and picked them because he thought the Pats lacked enough character to recover from crushing the Jets! Incredible! This is worst than simply picking against them! The Commissioner cannot accept or condone such cynicism from Wayne, and will revisit the home state exception this off season.  He can expect a visit from league office investigators .
Kevin remains in the lead, to everyone’s chagrin. Some people should never receive bragging rights! Marc tied him for the week at 13-3. The Commissioner and Ed came in at 12-4. Sean, Luke, Bran and Ryan and Jo were 11-5. Wayne and Kate were at 10-6.
Kevin, Sean and Bran and Ryan continue to lead in points with 84, 82 and 82.

It should be interesting as to who in the family will hold the pool Underachiever Award trophy for a very long year until the next Super Bowl is history. Looks like the Peterborough brothers are fighting for the honors. I'm sure the Commish has something to say about this. Cuz, it was 72 here today so don't even think about heading south. If anyone can get Ed's attention, ask him if he is coming south this winter. Best bet of the week: New England over Green Bay. That's enough, I can't give any more away. Happy Holidays to all!

Trivia guess retraction and re-guess

I'd like to retract my initial answer as I did not read the question properly (current nfl player). I blame my son for that. He rushed me (no pun intended). I'm going with McFadden from Arkansas. Since I am the only one who originally guessed, I consider a do-over acceptable.

Only Sean has responded to the NFL Trivia Question, bless his stout heart. Here is your last chance, or forever wear the title "Pretender." The answer will be revealed this weekend.

What current NFL player was the last running back to rush for over 100 yards against the University of Alabama? Lack of response will have serious consequences. Kevin cannot participate because I already told him.

Early Observations

  • Owners are getting more conservative as the season progresses.  Favored teams are being picked almost exclusively. But Cousin Wayne has shown a willingness to take some gambles. He picked the Vikes, the Skins, the Bills, the Lions and the Cowboys this week. He also picked the Bears to beat the Patriots, but he will get a pass on that. The by-laws clearly state that owners can pick against the Pats without recriminations if that owner lives in the state of the opposing team. He will of course lose a point when the Bears are crushed.
  • Only Marcus picked against the Jets this week, mainly because he can’t bring himself to pick the Jets. But he may be onto something. The Jets might have been exposed a bit and if they react the Sunday’s game with bravado substituting for intensity, they might get caught in a trap game. Then they face Pittsburg and Chicago in away games. They could easily be 0-3 in that stretch.
  • Consensus winners—the Colts, The Falcons, the Steelers, the Saints, and the Ravens—means that it will be difficult for owners to make much headway against each other until the playoffs.
  • There are only three really controversial games and they are Bucs vs. Redskins, Browns vs. Bills, and 49ers vs. Seahawks, mostly because one or both of the teams involved have been inconsistent.
  • If the Vikes, Redskins, Bills, Lions, 49ers, Bears and Cowboys win, Cousin Wayne will make up a lot of points this week.  He would gain 5 points on Kevin, 6 on Sean, 6 on Brandy and Ryan, and 7 on Jo.

Week 13 Observations

  • Converging Picks. As time goes by, owners picks are converging. Nine of 16 game picks were identical, the highest week ever. Three games had only one owner picking differently. Two other games had only two owners picking differently. The only games that were even somewhat controversial were the Falcons/Bucs, the Dolphins/Browns and the Steelers/Ravens.
  • Winners of the Week. Sean, Brandy and Ryan and Jo all came in at 13-3 for the week. Kevin, Patriots Hatter Ed, and Marc were close behind at 12-4. Luke and Kate were 11-5. Wayne and the Commish were 10-6.
  • Upsets of the Week. Both went to the Coin Toss, Raiders over the Chargers and Cowboys over the Colts.
  • Kevin’s Brood Rolling. Kevin, Sean, Brandy and Ryan and Jo were a combined 51-13 for the week. Overall they are 253-99.
  • A 3 Way Tie for First Place. Sharing first place with 70 points are Kevin, Sean and Brandy and Ryan.
  • In the Hunt.  Given the added points for playoff games, technically, everyone is still in the hunt.

Commissioner Office News

Cuz Wayne vs. Kevin
The Commissioner has received several allegations the past few days  and inquiries are being undertaken. Cus Wayne (see quoted email below) accuses Kevin of being a poor winner, but that is a given. However,  his more grievious charge is that Kevin is making gratuitous insults against him. This is serious and may call for a sanction.

On a related note, in his latest post, Kevin seems to have gratuitously insulted Wayne, Ed, Brandy, Marc, Luke and even the Commissioner. Alarmingly, accused by Wayne of being a whiner, Kevin calls him "Whining Wayne." Countering a put-down by repeating it is beneath any owner but especially Kevin, who has always shown creativity in his insults. Rest assured that the Commissioner is using all of the powers of his office to get to the bottom of this matter.

Owner Table Order
In another email, The Cuz questions the order of owners in the pick table. The Commissioner determined that the order be by when the ownership joined, he now fears a massive political conflagration over this highly controversial issue. Upon reflection, there does seem to be a gender disparity. All of our distaff owners are on the right of the table. In fact, the order could seem to reflect an age bias as well, but that is The Cuz's suggested solution! I'm sure that Jo, Brandy and the Great Kate might want to weigh in on this as well. Perhaps the determining factor should be family. Or geographic location. Or height. Or SAT scores.  The commissioner has determined that the Board of Owners must meet after the season to resolve this perplexing and complicated issue.

Ed
Patriots hater Ed (or, PHE, pronounced "fuh") mentioned that next season Patrick might join as well. This would help to provide the important intra-family competition needed for robust discussions and put-downs. The Commissioner reminds owners that the competition is open to all family members and people related to Ed as well. Friends require a security check and owner sponsorship. The forms are on the website.

Cuz Wayne's controversial email:
Commish:

Must I be subjected to these constant insults from that whining brother of yours?  I know he's feeling the heat but really, this is getting rather pathetic.

The only thing worse than a poor loser is a poor winner.  Because he holds a razor-thin lead on the field, he seems intent on insulting every member of the blog.  Rather than pick on poor Ed (I realize he's unaware of this) I think we should have a vote to censure that rogue brother of yours.  He must be in love with Sarah Palin.

WW

Commish:
I certainly hope you do not concern yourself with the ongoing petty editorial from the midwest. I fear the cooler weather is taking its toll on poor cuz. I was shocked to see his picks actually put in before the games were played this week. He must be on pins and needles. I also fear he may spend too much time starting the snowblower and may miss the deadline(again). Hence the title WW (Whiner Wayne). I propose Karen for sainthood!! Commish, take care of that.
Lots of across-the-board picks this week. Commish, you're not leaking my picks are you? Got to go see the Ravens-Steelers.

Week 13 Final Picks

Saturday, December 4, 2010

It seems Cuz has lowered himself further. I didn't realize that was possible. He now wants his weekly picks shrouded in secrecy. It wasn't enough that he fabricated some email story about getting his picks in on time. He has resorted to another underhanded tactic to try and shuffle his way to the top. Just call him Charlie Rangel!
No one should question the recent vote concerning Ed. We may question Brandy's birdbrain and animalistic picks. It is apparent she has some fixation to birds and animals. Which team is called the monkeys?
Marcus is so confused that rumor has it he is picking the Celtics this week! Poor boy. Commish, it may be too late for him. He must be cooking with too much wine and sherry!!
Cement-foot Luke has no idea who to pick. Is he in love or what?? Commish, these are your boys!!!
I do enjoy the observations that come out of the Commish' office. Does this come from a lack of sleep?
Note: The playoffs are coming and we are all in the hunt! (Sans Uncle Ed)

The Commissioner's Picks

The first six games seem like locks; Eagles over Texans, Packers over 49ers, Saints over the Bungles, Jags over an emotionally depleted Titans, Chiefs over the flailing Broncos, and the improving Bears over the Lions.

The Browns will give the Dolphins trouble, but the Fins are still in the hunt  and are at home.

I think Minnesota is gassed, and Buffalo has played everyone tough. That might be a scary game for the Pats down the road. Buffalo takes it in a squeaker.

The Giants take the Redskins fairly easily as Donovan's time in Washington draws to a close. The same with the Chargers over the unpredictable Raiders.

If Arizona had anything left, if would have won last week. The Rams are on the upswing a bit.

The Cowboys could give the Colts a game, but the Colts need a win badly and they are at home.
Seattle sucks, but Carolina sucks more and they are playing away.

The last three games will be very interesting. All should be close and all could go either way. I am picking the home team in each. Tampa Bay squeezes by the Falcons, Baltimore beats a gimpy Steelers team, and the Pats lead by 14 late, but end up winning by 4.

Luke and Marc

This sure has been a pathetic attempt by Luke and his brother Marc in choosing winners. One must be picking for the other. Did Cuz get his picks in this week or is he out of "do-overs"? As the race tightens, Brandy has become the feisty one. Watch out because she also is getting to know about the strategies associated with whist. She has been forewarned however of the "Ed affect" on that card game. SeanO continues to hang close to the top and its looking like bad sellout weeks only belong to the Peterborough brothers. Someone picked the Panthers this week. I did check the schedule for I thought maybe I missed that they were playing a high school team or had a bye, but they are playing a professional team.

On another note, Uncle Sam had a knee replacement procedure done last wednesday and he reports he will be ready for golf in the spring. Spring is in June up there.

Note to the Commish: I am able to post by going directly to the blog website but not through the "favorites". That is where it tells me my invitation has expired and to contact Mike O for another invitation. All along I just thought this is what happens to the frontrunners in the pool.

My next press conference is scheduled for tomorrow at 10am. At 9am I will lodge a formal protest that I did not really pick the teams that lost for me. I meant to choose the other team but I needed more time. Just about all my time and attention has gone toward finding out from the Commish when,if,why and how Cuz is still in this game!! Such a midwest whine!!!!!!!! There have been no WikiLeaks out of the Commish!!
